POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the SVP/Managing Director of Tides Foundation, the Director of Philanthropic Services develops and manages Tides Foundation's philanthropic programs and services, includes managing the delivery of institutional and individual donor services, managing donor relationships, supervising and coaching 15-20 dedicated client service teams, and developing and implementing grantmaking initiatives, grants administration, and strategic partnerships.   

The Director of Philanthropic Services is accountable for the quality of client experience with Tides Foundation.  S/he is the primary champion for Foundation client satisfaction and retention, requiring partnership and collaboration within the Foundation across Tides to ensure that shared clients receive excellent services.  S/he also leads the movement to continuously improve services and programs, ensuring that Tides Foundation is achieving its mission of supporting and strengthening progressive social change through creative philanthropy.

The Director of Philanthropic Services works with the Director of Operations to develop and implement strategic goals and objectives, maintains quality assurance, and coordinates evaluation procedures.  S/he also collaborates with the Communications & Marketing team to monitor trends in the sector, define markets and outreach strategies, and ensure that the client experience is reflected in communications materials.  As a member of the Management Team, s/he plays a central role in Tides leadership and works closely with the Foundation's Managing Director and Board of Directors, as well as the CEO and EVP of Tides, and the Managing Directors of Tides Center and Tides Shared Spaces.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage the Design and Delivery of Client Services

  • Ensure client satisfaction and retention through consistent, high quality services to individual and institutional donors
  • Develop innovative and effective services that reflect an understanding of client needs and the philanthropic sector
  • Serve as an ombudsperson for clients in the resolution of high-level conflicts and concerns
  • Partner with Finance and Operations to negotiate service contracts and fund agreements systems responsive to client needs
  • Work with Philanthropic Advisors on formulation of programmatic strategies and client services
  • Collaborate with Communications in prospect development and donor engagement
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations and Director of Finance to ensure synchronization of decision-making and implementation on a full range of management and client service issues.

Manage and Lead Philanthropic Services Staff

  • Manage distribution of new and ongoing client assignments to maximize efficient and effective service delivery
  • Coach and proactively support the professional and career development of staff with a range of experience levels, including partnering with Human Resources on recruitment, retention, and staff development
  • Inform and advise on all services, programs, and communications that impact, affect, or relate to clients
  • Support strategic and cross-team planning

Support the Managing Director in Strategic Development for the Foundation

  • Lead the development of staffing structures and processes to support effective service delivery to clients
  • Partner with Information Technology group and other Foundation stakeholders to ensure the Foundation's technology platform is developed and deployed to improve service, capture efficiencies, and support client service delivery and cross-entity program development
  • Define indicators of success and methods of measuring progress, including regular reporting to senior management team and Board
  • In collaboration with Finance department, set benchmarks for revenue and growth, manage existing revenue related to client fees, and participate in annual and long-term planning activities, as well as the implementation of these plans

Build and Maintain Relationships with Philanthropic and Progressive Communities

  • Develop strategic alliances and partnerships with organizations, individuals, networks, and vendors as client needs and Foundation growth require
  • Represent the Foundation publicly by participating in site visits, conferences, and other gatherings

Build Tides Network

  • Manage shared programmatic endeavors at the network level, including partnerships that engage both donors and projects
  • Build knowledge management and data sharing capacity, to measure progress and impact, and support a learning culture across Tides
  • Lead ongoing process improvement toward efficiencies in service delivery that enable staff to engage in a more consultative and pro-active manner

Other duties assigned by the SVP/Managing Director of Foundation.
Some travel required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to translate creative ideas into action in ways that balance progressive vision and values, donor input, organizational infrastructure and operations, and financial strategy

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills: ability to communicate effectively via phone and email, draft clear and concise memos and other documents, communicate effectively with diverse constituents, and speak comfortably and effectively in public settings
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to assimilate and present information in a clear and concise manner
  • Proven ability to develop proposals, make presentations, and communicate directly with clients to develop business, negotiate fees, and solicit support for funding collaborations
  • Proven ability to lead, motivate, and empower staff to excel, while managing complex relationships
  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to manage, track, and understand advanced financial management concepts
  • Ability to manage initiatives and budgets efficiently
  • Ability to articulate Tides Foundation's value-add and business model
  • Commitment to innovation and experimentation, and the ability to manage risk

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • An undergraduate degree required
  • Advanced degree or equivalent training in management preferred
  • 10+ years of nonprofit management, program, and supervisory experience in operation of $5M+
  • 5+ years experience in philanthropy
