We want to support you and others in your personal explorations in the nonprofit sector as well as support you in your formal educational and professional volunteer experience.
The internship program provides the selected candidate with a structured teaching/learning environment to enhance her/his academic or professional learning with practical experience and create meaningful work as a volunteer.
2008 Tides Internships
The following internships may vary from 2 weeks to 3 months and may be combined with one or more projects listed in this category. Schedules/hours for internship are flexible, depending on the hiring manager. Some internship may be paid. When applying, please state your area(s) of interest. - Grant Recipient Systems Implementation: Putting systems in place for Tides Foundation as a Grant Recipient. Implementation of systems for partnering with other institutional funders.
- Nonprofit MBA Internship Program: Plan and develop program with a focus on financial administration.
- Finance Operations Manual Development: Create a detailed manual on financial administration procedures–how to's, policy and procedures.
- Audit Program Development: Working with finance & administration leaders to develop audit processes and procedures in support of shared audit plan for all four entities.
- Consolidated Dashboard Development: Working with CFO and VP Operations to create a prototype shared dashboard across all four entities.
- Payroll Workflow: Working with HR department to support the continuing evolution of internal and client workflow documentation.
- Shared Customer Analysis: Identify and analyze existing customers shared by multiple Tides organizations.
- Corporate Compliance: Develop and refine tools for tracking and reporting on entity relationships and compliance issues such as policy, procedures and aggregated reporting for state and federal agencies.
- HR Intranet: Working with HR and IT departments, review, refine and update intranet materials for core staff including recruiting materials, forms, workflow and "how to” materials to enable a self service HR area.
- Key Performance Indicators: Understand key business goals and develop a reporting framework for measuring progress towards those goals. Develop an implementation plan that considers key issues relating to people, process and tools necessary to shift the organization.
- Sarbanes-Oxley for Nonprofits: Many legislators have indicated a desire to extend Sarbanes-Oxley law to the nonprofit sector. The purpose of this project would be to gain a full understanding of the implications of Sarbanes-Oxley to the nonprofits.
- 30 Years of Sector Impact: In the past 30 years, Tides has grown into one of the world's largest progressive institutions by innovating and providing valuable services to the nonprofit sector. This project will measure and describe the number of organization and programs Tides has supported, as well as to paint a backdrop for Tides to increase its social impact over the next 30-years.
- National Network of Fiscal Sponsors: Develop plan to increase membership and outline new initiatives to support program.
- National Conference: working with the Marketing & Outreach group, support the program and activities leading up to a 3 day national conference in San Francisco.
- Social Networking Web Analysis: working with Marketing and IT teams, recommend and implement program to raise visibility.
- Foundation Workflow Documentation: Craft communication templates for institutional funders as well as workflow design and documentation to be used internally. Documentation will focus on grantmaking as well as legal aspects of agreements.
- Project Metrics & Impact: Go through project grant reports and compile metrics on impact and success stories; create a system for aggregation of data.
- Alumni Outreach: locate former projects (updates/ reconnect/placement on websites). Check and update Links pages.
- Messaging Compliance: Review project websites for compliance and Tides branding; follow up to implement.
- Map out services and tools for improved client intranet, leveraging/with an understanding of what has been moved to new CRM system. Research RSS feeds, listservs, etc. for relevant events, training opportunities, and other capacity-building resources to publicize to projects. Update third-party online profiles and find additional locations for placement.
- Tides Shared Spaces offers a research and outreach internship to support its national education program, The NonprofitCenters Network (NCN). Responsibilities include:
- Researching topics of interest to Nonprofit Centers, such as green building operations, community programming, financing options and shared services.
- Developing resource materials for NCN members such as fact sheets and handbooks.
- Contacting NCN members and constituents to gather information for NCN Online Resource Center and Profile Directories.
- Writing articles and profiles for NCN online newsletter Blueprints for Success.
- Updating NCN website with new resources, center profiles, and partner profiles.
- New Hire Orientation (NHO): Continue to support the evolution of the NHO materials and process, in alignment with broader employment continuum.

For all projects, Interns will work with executives, managers and staff throughout Tides. Interns will both learn about Tides and have an opportunity to influence the future course of these innovative nonprofit organizations.
