Program

Policy, Strategy & Global Initiatives

The Detention Watch Network (DWN) is a national member-led coalition that works locally and in national collaboration to educate the public, media and policy makers about the injustices of the U.S. immigration detention and deportation system and advocate for humane reform. Network members include formerly detained people and their families, community- and faith-based groups, legal service providers, national and regional advocates, law school clinics, and concerned citizens. Together, the members of the Network work to (i) stop the expansion of harmful immigration enforcement laws, policies and practices that undermine fundamental human rights and an effective national security policy, (ii) restore humane laws and policies that protect immigrants and their families, and (iii) improve the current immigration enforcement system. DWN is the only national coalition that focuses exclusively on immigration enforcement issues. It is a critical national advocate for a rational and limited immigration detention and deportation system. It is recognized as the “go-to” resource on detention and deportation issues by media and many policymakers. While the Network was formed primarily to advocate against expansive detention and deplorable detention conditions, most of its members also work on closely related issues. The Network therefore also makes important linkages with advocates on criminal justice system reform and broader issues relating to immigration enforcement, such as raids, due process, and local government enforcement of immigration laws.
