Program

Environment & Health

The mission of the Funders Workgroup for Sustainable Production and Consumption is to advance understanding, foster collaboration and enhance the overall effectiveness of grantmaking for a sustainable world. We are committed to engendering a truly sustainable and just culture and economy by addressing the hidden social, environmental and health costs of production, consumption, and the flow of material goods through our society. Our goal is to help catalyze and accelerate a shift to sustainable production and consumption and to promote a society that embraces sustainability. We are guided by the following values: • Equity: People are at the heart of a sustainable society – and equal access to the opportunities generated by sustainable production and consumption is core to our work. • Inclusion: Our workgroup is open to grantmakers exploring the values of sustainability no matter what their funding program is called. • Stewardship: We promote "best practices" (zero waste events, locally sourced goods, etc.) at our own events and those of other organizations, including the Environmental Grantmakers Association, and we champion the sound stewardship of natural resources among our workgroup members in all our operations. • Transparency: While we are part of the funder community, we believe that effective grantmaking occurs only in honest, open and respectful collaboration with the non-profit sector. We will achieve our mission by providing collaborative learning opportunities for grantmakers through timely reports, meetings, site visits, conference calls, strategic grantmaking initiatives and direct contact with like minded colleagues; and working closely with a broad cross-section of nonprofit organizations, business leaders, academics and scientists, and public officials developing and implementing a variety of approaches to shifting patterns of production and consumption.
