Sophisticated grantmaking programs often go beyond financial support to include convenings, trainings, and coaching to build strength in grassroots organizing, advocacy, and fundraising. Robust capacity-building programs not only support grantees for the long-term, they also help funders to become leaders in specific issue-areas which in turn can sustain increased giving to the issue over time.
Through capacity building programs, funders have built strong networks among advocacy groups working on U.S. foreign policy, trained reproductive justice organizations on fundraising and strategic communications, and brought best practices to emerging organizations working with LGBT youth in foster care.
Many funders combine the structures of a grantmaking fund with a fiscally sponsored project to provide capacity building services to their grantees.
For those funders not working through a Tides grantmaking vehicle, our foundation contract management services offer funders a way to make a single grant to Tides, and then have Tides administer the contracts and expenses related to capacity building programs.
