Among the stately rows of white-washed buildings with ceramic tile roofs at the Veterans Home of California in Yountville, one quietly stands out from the rest.

At most of the buildings, electric wheelchairs are parked outside the main doors. Elderly residents doze in the warm mid-valley sun, or walk or roll past the manicured lawns to appointments and visits around the campus.

But at one building dozens of mountain bikes — not wheelchairs — are clustered in racks by the main door. The guys smoking cigarettes outside are young enough to be the grandchildren of most Vets Home residents.

These 30 or so young men are part of the Pathway Home Project, a one-of-a-kind program for veterans of what President George W. Bush called the war on terror.
