The Fresno Bee
Two years ago, when Katie Flinn and Jason Gardner of Fresno started planning their dream home in the Fresno County foothills, they didn't think they'd end up building a house out of straw.
And Fresno architect Art Dyson's plans for the home -- an organic design that melds the home's sweeping roof line with the grassy hillside it will be built against -- certainly doesn't evoke thatched-roof cottages of old.
But then, straw-bale construction is itself a blend of old-fashioned practicality, with roots that stretch back 100 years to the American prairies, and modern environmental and energy consciousness.
