Tides 2008 Annual Report: Letter from CEO

Building a Movement of Shared Values and Shared Resources

Momentum '08

Our annual Momentum Leadership Conference is a creative space, an opportunity for connection, and a place where boundaries are broken and bridges are built. Momentum 2008, held in San Francisco, mined the best new thinking in the progressive community to provide and celebrate inspiration for change.

Participants were entertained, surprised, and challenged to consider new perspectives with an open mind. They we asked the question, “where will you find your next inspiration for social change?” and they were encouraged to explore collaborations across issue areas and boundaries. Each of the seven plenary sessions—Neighborhood, Democracy, Money, Health, Wars, Media, and the Earth—included speakers from a range of funders, leaders in key nonprofits, think tanks, and activist organizations. Participants left ready to face the challenges of their work with renewed energy and ideas. Several participants said, “it was the best conference I have ever attended.”

We encourage you to view the videos from Momentum 2008. They include presentations from engaging thinkers such as Eboo Patel (Interfaith Youth Core, Advisor, White House Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships), Maria Teresa Petersen (Voto Latino, MSNBC), and Markos “Kos” Moulitsas (The Daily Kos).

Convening and Connecting

Convening and Connecting

Tides is unique in the nonprofit sector. Because we have had the good fortune to work with such a broad array of philanthropists, foundations, activists, and entrepreneurs, we have been able to serve as a nexus point in the progressive movement. From our annual Momentum conference to project gatherings, donor briefings, and online events, Tides is a convener and connector for those in our community and beyond.

We bring together the sector’s most innovative thinkers, dedicated activists, and brightest minds to share knowledge, debate ideas, and spur collaborations. We believe authentic engagement and dialog is a critical piece of social change work. If you’d like to connect with the Tides community, come to our 2009 Momentum conference, subscribe to our Tidings newsletter, or simply send us an email at info@tides.org.
