Adam Michaelsson

Grants Specialist

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I partner with Legal, Client Services, and Finance to provide exceptional grantmaking services for our clients and grantees around the world.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

A native Swede, I moved to San Francisco to immerse myself in the philanthropic sector and learn how to best support organizations.

More about Adam:

Adam moved to San Francisco from Sweden in 2014. Before joining Tides, Adam graduated from Lund University with degrees in Political Science and Economics. He also did a 1-year study exchange at University of California at Santa Barbara. Adam received a scholarship to conduct field research for his thesis, and he spent 10 weeks in Guatemala collecting data on mobile phone payments. As a Grant Specialist at Tides, Adam ensures that the grantmaking stays compliant and collaborates with clients and grantees to further their mission. In his spare time, Adam enjoys traveling and playing soccer

Alexander Sloan

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I help find and bring in new clients and partners as well as coordinate our marketing and communications strategy.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

A lot of backpacking in Southeast Asia and Western China in college.

Alex currently serves as Vice President of Strategic Partnerships & Communications leading Tides marketing, communications and new client development efforts. Alex was previously Director of Innovation Investments and Portfolio Director at the Skoll Foundation. Alex also serves as founding Chairman and President of Excelerate Foundation, a role that he has held for over 25 years. Prior to Skoll, Alex spent 18 years as senior investment professional at several leading venture capital firms.

What inspires you to work in social change?

Engaging with others – from 1-1 conversations on overcoming prejudice to back-end support that reaches millions to rise to a challenge.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

Translating my personal experience from illegal immigration to helping hundreds of undocumented through funding, empathy and education.

What’s your favorite quote or motto?

More about Alex:

Alex Rojas joined Tides in 2012. Alex has more than 25 years of experience in nonprofit administration, grants management, and curriculum development. Prior to joining Tides Alex was a director with the Twenty-First Century Foundation (21CF), a national public foundation focused on issues of relevance to the Black community. Alex is deeply committed to leadership development and capacity building. Alex also co-founded and served as director of Youth Unlimited, a New York City leadership program that sought to train and place low-income youth in positions of leadership in their communities.

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I activate relationships in Tides’ ecosystem of changemakers through thoughtful use of and compelling programming within our physical spaces.

What inspires you to work in social change?

Grandchild of immigrants, daughter of same sex parents, and fierce believer that the design and use of spaces are deeply linked to equity.

Lexi has worked within the intersection of good design, the built environment, & the social fabric of communities for over last ten years, including roles at the Housing Industry Foundation, KaBOOM!, and Rebuilding Together. Originally from western Maryland, Lexi comes to San Francisco by way of the Midwest, where she earned an MA in Social Service Administration with a concentration in Community Planning, Organizing & Development from the University of Chicago. She also serves as co-director of New Leaders Council San Francisco, an organization dedicated to building the progressive bench.

Alice Wagner

Operations Manager, Tides Converge NY

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

In running Tides Converge New York, I work to optimize shared space, customer service and the nonprofit tenant network

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

I facilitated the Taskforce Against Racism, a group that ran events engaging 1,500 youth, 6 to 25 yrs old, representing 4 boroughs of NYC.

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I navigate the rules and legal structures to house innovative work so our partners can focus on driving change.

What inspires you to work in social change?

Growing up on the border with family and friends on both sides drives me to build an equitable world of social justice and shared prosperity.

More about Amanda:

Amanda Keton serves as Tides General Counsel, where she and her team keep Tides in legal compliance and manage organizational risk so our partners can focus on making social change. Amanda Keton is also Managing Director for Tides Advocacy, a 501(c)(4) affiliate of Tides, where she oversees the programmatic and financial operations. Previously, she worked for Ernst & Young providing nonprofit organizations with tax consulting, advisory and compliance services. Amanda is on the Board of Directors for Network for Good, and her past board service includes the ACLU of Northern California and the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. Amanda is a member of the California State Bar and graduated with a Master of Laws in Taxation cum laude and Juris Doctor from University of San Diego School of Law. Amanda also completed a Master of Arts in Education.

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I help organizations by providing strategic, effective, and thoughtful services to our fiscally sponsored projects.

What inspires you to work in social change?

Tides partners and projects, specifically the incredible impact they have on the community locally, nationally and world-wide.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

Travel solo throughout Europe.

I build lasting relationships and trust with our partners through work that is rooted in empathy to help their ideas thrive into change.

What inspires you to work in social change?

The lived experiences that I and others in my community share, and the dedication to lifting those voices to power and healing.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

Moved across the country from New Jersey to California for an AmeriCorps opportunity to pursue my calling to public servitude.

I make sure outgoing payments are legit, which aligns to not only accounting standards but also Tides standards.

What inspires you to work in social change?

I received help before and want to help others with my current contributions to a nonprofit like Tides.

As an immigrant, transracial adoptee, and woman of color, I am passionate about social justice and opportunity for marginalized communities.

A belief that all people deserve access to a safe, healthy, just and meaningful life.

Ashley Bastinelli, SPHR, has 10+ years of progressive Human Resources experience in the for profit and non-profit sectors. Currently, Ashley is a Sr. HR Manager at Tides where she provides HR advisory services to social ventures nationwide. Ashley has a BA in Human & Organizational Development from Vanderbilt University and MA in Organizational Development from University of San Francisco. She is also a certified coach through the Coaches Training Institute.

Becca Shepherd

Finance Business Partner

How do you create impact in your role at Tides?

I provide reporting and consultative support to several donors and help initiate and develop new services for our partners.

What is the most daring thing you’ve done?

I’ve moved across the country four times.

Becca Shepherd is the Finance Business Partner at Tides. Becca formerly worked with two startups based in Silicon Valley that advanced the local social entrepreneurship and impact investing space. Her background spans across for-profit and non-profit ventures, consulting, retail, and living in Washington, DC, Oregon, North Carolina, and California. She holds a BA in Economics from the University of Oregon and an MBA from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
