Back to school season has arrived—a familiar milestone in an uncertain time. But educators, parents, and students still face unprecedented challenges to health, safety, and security this year as we keep grappling with an unrelenting pandemic. All while entrenched inequities in the education system continue to disproportionately impact BIPOC and immigrant communities, students with disabilities, and many others, making counter-measures all the more urgent. The Tides Center social ventures and Tides Foundation Fund we’ve highlighted below fight these inequities to create bold changes in education.

Talent Development Secondary (TDS)

Talent Development Secondary provides evidence-based models, tools, and services to the most challenged secondary schools serving the most vulnerable students in the country. With expertise in low‐performing, non‐selective neighborhood schools and secondary schools in high‐poverty neighborhoods, TDS has developed a research-based model to keep all students on the path to graduation. TDS has been a partner for change in hundreds of schools in cities, suburbs, and rural areas across the country. Their vision is a nation in which our most vulnerable students have access to an education that develops their unique strengths and talents, supports them to succeed, and prepares them for the future. Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC)
HERC believes in a “diverse, equitable, and inclusive higher education workplace where people from all backgrounds and perspectives can thrive.” This nonprofit consortium of colleges, universities, and related groups is committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in the higher education workforce and strives to create equity in the pipeline of faculty, staff, and executives in academia. National Center for Earth and Space Science Education

The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) aims to ensure a scientifically literate public and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by communicating science as a human endeavor. NCESSE creates and oversees a wide array of national STEM education programs for schools, families, and the public; professional development workshops and institutes for grade K-12 educators; world-class exhibitions for museums, science centers, and universities; and online experiences. NCESSE’s international arm, the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Space Education, was founded on the principle that “humanity is on a journey aboard spaceship Earth, that the story of our existence knows no national borders, and it should be the birthright for all our children to understand that the explorer lives within them.” The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) is a Tides Center social venture. Outside Lands Works (OLW)
Outside Lands Works supports nonprofit music and arts education programs for underserved local communities. The signature Outside Lands Festival (scheduled for Halloween Weekend in San Francisco in 2021) has become one of the Bay Area’s most anticipated music events. OLW has invited music and art students throughout the Bay Area to come to the concerts and get in the control rooms to experience “behind the scenes” operations at past festivals. The Starfish Institute (100Kin10)
The Starfish Institute’s 100Kin10 initiative is a national network of diverse organizations with a shared purpose to provide America’s classrooms with 100,000 science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in 10 years and end the STEM teacher shortage. 100Kin10’s cross-sector network of leading organizations and first-of-its-kind map of the entire STEM teaching ecosystem have identified opportunities with the most significant potential for impact. The Starfish Institute draws on the 100Kin10 approach to partner with other changemakers to tackle inequity in healthcare, democracy, housing, justice, education, and more. NYC Coalition for Educational Justice
NYC Coalition for Educational Justice is a parent-led movement to end inequities in the city’s public school system.
A parent-led movement to end inequities in the city’s public school system, the NYC Coalition for Educational Justice is a collaborative of community-based organizations and unions mobilizing for a well-rounded quality education for all students. The organization recently won an important victory when NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter announced the NYC Department of Education’s historic investment in Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education aligned Universal Mosaic Curriculum.
