Game Changers: Interactive Media Makes Social Change

Tides is proud to highlight the work of innovative organizations like Games for Change, the leading global advocate for supporting and making games for social impact.  By supporting and showcasing digital and non-digital games, Games for Change engages children, youth, and adults to think about and take action on a wide range of pressing social issues, racial inequalities, livable communities, and energy consumption.

Games for Change Festival 2011

The annual Games for Change Festival is the largest gaming event in New York City and the only international event uniting “games for change” creators, the public, civil society, academia, the gaming industry and media.

Attendees of the Festival can enjoy over 30+ hours of keynotes, presentations, panels and more. In addition to various live play sessions, this year’s event will feature a “Game Arcade”, highlighting the nominees for this year’s Games for Change Awards. And while the focus is on games, our Festival is the perfect place to network with decision-makers from the government and NGOs, innovative game designers and publishers, visionary thought leaders in education and global development and members of the media.

Members of the Tides Community may be especially interested in the following sessions, aimed at drawing connections between funders, media makers, NGOs, and other social change agents:

Featured Keynote: Philanthropy, Movements and Making Media Matter
A provocative conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheryl WuDunn, Laura Pincus Hartman of Zynga.org, and Pierre Guillaume Wielezynski of the World Food program representing perspectives from entrepreneurs, philanthropists, academics and business leaders who have invested in popular media as part of their platforms to address pressing social concerns or are using platforms such as social games to raise awareness and dollars to achieve their agenda. What works, what lessons have been learned and what kinds of games and campaigns have the potential to move millions.  Read More.

Workshop: The Case for Social Impact Games
This intimate format will enable funders, implementing partners and game designers to share in-depth their collaborative experiences on games covering a range of subject areas, including: public health, global development, education and civic engagement.  Read More.
