In a year when the basic freedoms of many communities were under fire, Tides unveiled new grantmaking principles and practices that center the lived experience, views, and voices of communities directly affected by injustice and inequity. It’s through our grantmaking and partnerships that we aim to dismantle antiquated, harmful paradigms within philanthropy, ensuring our doer partners have the control they need to advance their missions and serve their communities.

Throughout 2024, we prioritized grantee-led funding strategies that deepened our support of girls and young women, immigrants, and other historically excluded communities. We also marked the first year of the Immigrants Belong Fund, a powerful vehicle for resourcing pro-immigrant storytelling. The programs we supported through our Tides-led initiatives continued to disrupt unjust systems in pursuit of a more inclusive society.

Centering the Voices of Young Women

Less than 2% of foundation funding is directed to girls and young women, a figure that shrinks even further when we zoom in on girls and young women of color specifically. Tides believes that making an impact in girls’ lives requires more resources — and that girls, young women, and gender-expansive youth have a voice in how those resources should be deployed. In 2024, Tides introduced a Youth Advisory Council to our Advancing Girls Fund to elevate youth voices and perspectives in the $25 million of grants we made.

Resourcing Trans Justice Groups

Trans people across the nation are increasingly under attack simply for living their truth. In 2024, lawmakers proposed 701 anti-trans bills, 50 of which passed in 43 states. The Trans Justice Funding Project (TJFP) is pushing back by resourcing grassroots trans justice groups with trust and no strings attached.
