The Works:
Predictive philanthropy is a strategy for data-driven mobilization of resources to emerging communities of opportunity. Inspired by the growth of a new majority and based on successful models of predictive analytics, this framework aims to focus and renew the power of philanthropy to make truly transformative change that is pro-active in nature and equitable at its core. * Examples of potential indicators: fast migrations of low-income communities and communities of color, single industry economies, and resource density.
** Such as rural communities with new immigrant/refugee populations.
Guiding Principles:
- Capitalize on the wealth of data to inform pre-emptive, collective decision-making.
- Leverage nationwide resources to develop local, community-based leadership and assets.
- Build strong infrastructures to meet emerging needs instead of triaging symptoms with scattered safety nets.
- Align the social change sector through the employment of shared tools and platforms, collaborative funding vehicles, and nation-to-neighborhood insights.
The Means:
- An online data mapping and sharing platform with the functionality and flexibility to support information-based dialogues and processes.
- A collective action fund (CAF) that makes multi-year general operating grants and investments to local entities at a 2:1 match.
- Quarterly evaluation and strategy convenings at national and local levels.
- The Tides Technical Assistance Fund that provides additional infrastructure investments in local nonprofits and enterprises.
