Guilty: Accountability Prevails

Tides believes that accountability prevailed with the conviction of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. This case mirrors countless others across the country involving Black men and women in a system rife with racism. The calls for change that echoed across the globe after the tragic murder of George Floyd represented a unified voice—in fact, a movement—decrying racial injustice against Black communities and other marginalized communities of color. While few trials involving police officers result in conviction, this verdict shows that those calls have, for once, been heard.

We must continue the work to ensure that racial justice extends beyond one verdict and becomes the cornerstone of our entire criminal justice system. Tides stands against the systemic racism that is pervasive throughout all aspects of American life. We are hopeful this verdict signifies a turning point in this country—and we remain more committed than ever to our values rooted in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, to ensure that it does.

In solidarity,
The Tides Community
