Tides Stands with the Southern Poverty Law Center

For more than half a century, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) has been a foundational part of the legal and civic infrastructure working to build a multiracial democracy across the Deep South.

At a time when SPLC is facing political and financial attacks, Tides is proud to stand with them in solidarity and to serve as a partner on their important initiatives, including Vote Your Voice.

Launched in 2020, Vote Your Voice supports a network of nonprofit organizations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi working year-round to expand voter participation, protect the freedom to vote, and build lasting political power in the communities most affected by voter suppression. It reflects what philanthropy at its best can look like: trusting local leaders, resourcing them sustainably, and staying in the work over the long term.

That work has only grown more urgent following the Supreme Court’s 6–3 decision in Louisiana v. Callais, which significantly weakened one of the remaining protections of the Voting Rights Act. In the immediate fallout from the Court’s decision, two southern legislatures are racing to redraw their Congressional maps, which could dilute Black voting power in those states.

As a 50-year-old DAF provider, and one of the first founded with an explicit commitment to social justice and human rights, Tides will continue to honor donor recommendations to SPLC and to other civil rights organizations in good standing with the IRS.

Through our Healthy Democracy Fund and Vote Your Voice partnership, we will continue supporting the multiracial coalitions, civic engagement, and Southern organizing that this moment calls for.
