Abortion is Health Care: Support These Organizations Fighting for Reproductive Justice

The unthinkable has happened. The Supreme Court has ended the constitutional right to abortion after nearly 50 years, opening the floodgates for states to further restrict access to abortion. This decision will have a devastating impact on human rights.

Black women, for instance, are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women; LGBTQ+ individuals face systemic barriers to comprehensive health care; and people residing in states with pre-Roe bans or “trigger” laws have the fewest economic and health care protections in the country. More so, 77 percent of women who seek abortions already have children, according to a 2021 study, which creates further barriers to reproductive freedom due to lack of access to affordable childcare, or paid leave from work for interstate travel.

To help provide critical resources to organizations on the front lines of reproductive justice and abortion access, and to advance our mission of building an equitable future, Tides has curated a list of 501(c)(3) organizations that have been pre-approved for no-cost expedited grantmaking.

These organizations possess the local knowledge — particularly in states likely to be most affected by the overturning of Roe v. Wade — or national networks with a proven track record of impact. On this list, we have uplifted several organizations that serve communities of color, economically disadvantaged, rural, queer, and indigenous communities. We will update this post with our recommendations as additional information becomes available. National Reproductive Justice Organizations

• If/When/How: Lawyering for Reproductive Justice: A nationwide network of lawyers, law students, legal professionals, and movement organizers who are working to make reproductive freedom a reality for all.
• National Network of Abortion Funds: Builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic, and reproductive justice.
• The Brigid Alliance: Assists with travel costs related to abortion across the U.S.
• The Lawyering Project: Leverages legislation to improve abortion access and uphold the rights and dignity of people seeking and providing reproductive health care.

Organizations Centering BIPOC and/or Queer Communities:

• Holler Health Justice: Supporting abortion access by offering practical support, such as transportation in communities in Appalachia most disproportionately affected by health inequities, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ folk, those in rural areas, and those with low income. 
• Make it Work Nevada: Centers their work and organizing around the experiences and challenges of Black women and women of color with a scope of focus including racial and reproductive justice.
• Sister Song: Strengthens and amplifies the collective voices of Indigenous women and women of color to achieve reproductive justice by eradicating reproductive oppression and securing human rights.
• SPARK Reproductive Justice NOW: Spark engages in power building through grassroots organizing, advocacy, and knowledge-building in Georgia and across the U.S. South, centering Black queer women, trans folks, and folks living outside the gender binary.

Local and Regional Organizations

• Carolina Abortion Fund: Works in partnership with reproductive justice organizations locally, regionally, and nationally to support families’ access to parenting, abortion, and adoption as valid reproductive options.
• Frontera Fund: The Frontera Fund provides financial support, travel assistance, and a sense of community for those seeking abortions in the Rio Grande Valley and throughout Texas.
• Kentucky Health Justice Network: Builds the power of Kentuckians to achieve reproductive justice through direct support, education, and outreach.
• Lift Louisiana: Educating, advocating, and litigating for policy changes needed to improve the health and well-being of Louisiana’s women, their families, and their communities.
